How to Convert Apple Lossless to MP3

Converting audio file types can be done easily in iTunes as well as other popular audio programs such as Audacity or Logic. For conversion between Apple Lossless (m4a), iTunes is all you need. While most current MP3 players can play m4a files, MP3 conversions can be useful for creating smaller files to put on social websites or for saving space on your iPod or MP3 player.

Converting to MP3

Step 1

Before converting a specific file, you must change the file setting in iTunes "Preferences." In Windows, go to Edit>Preferences. For Mac, go to iTunes>Preferences. Under the General tab, click "Import Settings." There will be a scroll-down menu at the top. Make sure this is set to MP3. (For other files types, select AIFF, AAC, or whatever conversion you want.)

Step 2

Select the file or files you want to convert in the library window.

Step 3

To start the conversion, go to the Advanced menu and select "Create MP3 Version." This will create an MP3 version of the file in the same directory.

Tips

When looking at files in the iTunes library, you will not be able to see which file is the original and which is the MP3. To do this, go to the info for either file, or go to the file directory in the finder.
